My very first call from a resident was about an issue that has been a persistant problem for the users of Smallthorne community hall, the floor! Like many of our city council buildings the community centre and hall has served its residents for many years holding parties, socials, youth clubs, receptions, celebrations and many many more activities. like many of our city council buildings the hall is now suffering from a decaying floor after regular use with floorboards cracking and breaking on almost a monthly basis.
This problem was first highlighted by the Smallthorne Diamonds dance troupe who had to stop using the hall for a period of time when it underwent a series of repairs and forced the indoor bowls, Dancing, Troupe and many other activities to be put on hold while the problem was rectified.
In my most recent surgery down at Smallthorne the problem was highlighted again and i really now want to help the committee, which i am about to join, to get this problem resolved once and for all. Repairing the floorboards every month is not economical and in fact is highly wasteful, wasting peoples time in administering the problems, wasting council money on contractors and wasting time that the community hall is open generating a profit towards self sustainability.
I am now highly motivated to getting this floor replaced and if i can get in done by the end of my term in May 2011 i will be highly satisfied as i know what a frustration it is for the many many users each week. There are many barriers to accessing funding to replace it and even more barriers to getting property services to reinvest in replacing the entire floor but i am confident that this important community asset will be rejuvenated and will do everything i can in the coming months to get the ball rolling.
