For the past 7 years Matt has worked towards improving the community in Stoke-On-Trent primarily working with children and young people. He is a Director of a leading youth project based in Burslem that works with disadvantaged and excluded teenagers, A trustee of Local Charity “Arch” has supported various anti racism events over the past few years. In 2007 he was nominated and awarded the title of “Stoke-On-Trent” Citizen of the year at a prestigious ceremony at the Kings Hall.

In 2010 he ran as the Labour candidate for the East Valley Ward and won becoming the first Labour Councillor in that Area for many years. Since that time he has become known as an active councillor in the ward, helping local residents, groups and committees get things done!

In the May 2011 elections Matt stood as the Labour party candidate in the ward of Ford Green & Smallthorne in the new ward created after the boundary changes. Matt won with the third highest majority out of 40 wards with a 33% margin to his closest rival and over 50% of the total vote.
